In an attempt to appease users after gutting their iOS app post-Amazon acquisition, Comixology added a $5 gift voucher to everyone's accounts. While I — like everyone else in the world, it seems — wasn't too happy about having in-app purchasing removed from the app, I like free stuff as much as the next guy.
The question was: What to spend it on?
For some reason my mind immediately went to Savage Dragon. After listening to a "recommendations" episode of the Giant Size podcast last year, John Gholson's heartfelt endorsement of this book really stuck with me. Despite the fact that the book is nearing it's 200th issue (dude, that's a lot of catching up), I pulled the trigger on the first volume on the Comixology site.
And boy, am I glad I did.
Savage Dragon is, simply put, fun as hell. Half classically cheesy superhero book, half gritty true-to-life city streets saga. With a big, muscular, fast-healing green-skinned, fin-headed amnesiac protagonist. The perfect relaxing read for a grown-up 80s kid like myself.
